Executive Coaching: A viable remedy to job dissatisfaction?

How many times have you questioned your state of mind with regards to your current line of work? Are you happy with your job? According to a survey conducted by recruitment firm Randstad,  a survey of over 5600 Singaporeans showed that nearly half of them are unsatisfied with their current occupations, who see it as nothing more than a way to put food on the table. If that survey is anything to go by, those are alarming figures for our nation. Job dissatisfaction should not be taken lightly as it could lead to serious social consequences.

Addressing the causes of job dissatisfaction is a whole other topic on its own and requires complex study and gathering of statistics, but what it mainly boils down to is in 4 key areas:

– Being Underpaid: Usually viewed from a subjective point of view. That is when someone compares his/her quality of life with others who are working in the same field or industry and comes to the conclusion that they are not being paid enough.

– Limited Career Growth: Usually it is a state of mind accumulated over a period of time. Lack of opportunities to climb the corporate ladder may cause the employee regret and confusion, leading him/her to leave the company to seek other opportunities.

– Poor Management: Instances such as holding back employees to work longer hours, harassment and bullying are serious issues that will cause an employee to feel demotivated or sometimes even depressed.

– Work environment: Needless to say differences of opinions with colleagues and unsatisfactory working conditions would cause anyone to think twice about their predicament.

Why consider coaching as a means to alleviate job dissatisfaction?

 

  1. A better alternative to switching jobs

Leaving your current job might leave in you in a fix where you may take months to find another job that you will feel satisfied working in. And that may prove in itself to be a gamble. Executive coaching, however, inspires you tackle your problems head on.  People sometimes need a push to be able to realise their self-worth. Executive coaching is one such way to help you reinforce your perspectives of your career and life goals.

And even if it comes to point where you do switch jobs, the mental fortitude that you could acquire through coaching will definitely help with your ascension up the corporate ladder and standing up for yourself when it really matters.

The Institute of Employment Studies conducted a study on the effects of corporate coaching on an employee’s well-being before and after undergoing coaching sessions. The results showed evidence of statistically significant increases in perceptions of well‐being among employees soon after a period of coaching. This is line with other international study findings of managers being coached by external professional coaches.

The outcomes had residual effects on employees which involves a change in their mind-set and confidence levels. After being coached, employees felt more well-equipped to handle challenges, and also are in a better position to think of solutions when faced with problems.

  1. Exerting a positive impact on others

As discussed, job dissatisfaction is not an isolated problem. An employee who is left disgruntled about his work life may also unknowingly affect his colleagues negatively as well. This may set a chain reaction which can strain relations between them and their employer.

With executive coaching, the employee would attain some form of self-satisfaction. With this new found perspective s/he can meet his challenges head on and also exert a positive impact on his/her colleagues who may be facing issues with job satisfaction as well.

This article does not suggest that switching jobs will definitely adversely affect your career progression, but it recommends you to take a step back and see the bigger picture before planning your next move. The best way to start off with that is to undergo coaching sessions to realize your value for greater clarity of your overall career well-being.
